On a sunny day, there’s nothing better than meeting friends for a leisurely picnic. So, why not pack a basket full of goodies and head over to one of these parks? They’re the best places to enjoy a picnic in the MO-KS Metro Area.
Spanning 75 acres, Loose Park is one of the area’s largest and most historic parks. The land was once owned by William Bent, a man who traded with Native Americans and led wagon trains. The park is best known as one of the major sites of the Battle of Westport during the Civil War and is also renowned for its impressive rose garden. Established in 1931, the garden features approximately 4,000 roses of nearly 168 varieties. Recently, the city planted 1,200 more roses in the garden. This park is an amazing place for a picnic. Don’t forget to check out the Civil War cannon or feed the ducks after your meal!
You can also make shelter reservations for private gatherings at Loose Park.
Kaw Point Park
The Lewis and Clark Expedition arrived at Kaw Point Park on June 26, 1804. The travelers stayed for three days to sleep, repair their boats, and explore the surrounding countryside. The park remains in its natural state today and features scenic trails as well as picturesque views of downtown Kansas City. You can enjoy a picnic lunch under the trees while watching planes land and takeoff from the nearby airport.
Parkville Nature Sanctuary
Spanning 115 acres, the Parkville Nature Sanctuary is a scenic destination that’s open from sunrise to sunset. It features three miles of hiking trails and gorgeous native flora and fauna. After your picnic, take a stroll along several trails to see stunning waterfalls, colorful wildflowers, and chirping birds. Old Kate Trail has a beautiful waterfall and observation bridge that’s perfect for wedding, engagement, or anniversary photos. If you prefer to contemplate nature quietly, enjoy the scenery from one of the many benches on location.
