Visit The Kansas City Zoo

Less than eleven miles from The Highlands is a 202-acre property that’s home to more than 1,300 animals. It’s known as the Kansas City Zoo and it dates back to 1909. In 2016, the zoo welcomed more than one million people for the first time in its history. Visitors should plan on spending several hours as there is much to see and do including:

Helzberg Penguin Plaza

Open since 2013, the Helzberg Penguin Plaza is home to charming Humboldt penguins. The exhibit is kept between 50 and 80 degrees to model the temperatures of their native Chilean and Peruvian habitats and with more than 25,000 gallons of water, the birds have plenty of room to swim and play. During the warmer months, the exhibit opens to the outdoors.

Orangutan Canopy

The Orangutan Canopy exhibit allows visitors to see these incredible animals like never before. According to the zoo’s website, the outdoor habitat is designed to highlight the fascinating aspects of the wise orangutans as it challenges their dexterity and intelligence. Visitors can watch them from an open-air shelter that features a long window, as well as the zookeepers who conduct live demonstrations and training sessions.

African Sky Safari

For a unique experience, take a ride on the African Sky Safari. As you are high above the ground, you’ll see cheetahs, giraffes, lions, rhinos, and more. The ride runs when the weather permits and lasts about seven minutes.
